Personnel

ESN Rocky Mountain personnel are experienced in broad range of environmental site assessment and remediation services, and have considerable additional experience in site investigation and remediation. All field personnel have current OSHA training and medical monitoring, including current respirator fit tests. Some have DoE Rad II Certification.

James Viellenave, President, B.A. Geography, 1971, U.C. Santa Barbara; M.A. Geography, 1973, U.C. Riverside. Mr. Viellenave has nearly 30 years operating and management experience in site investigation and remediation, including hundreds of projects with ESN since forming the company in 1995. ESN’s work has included soil, ground water, and vapor sampling, and both on-site and fixed lab analysis of samples. ESN has developed sophisticated new methods for on-site and other analysis of vapors for risk assessments. In addition, ESN has installed and monitored dozens of in situ remediation programs. ESN has developed and implemented novel delivery systems for injection of remediation chemicals, including ORC, HRC, per-oxygen compounds, and special slurries for reactive barrier walls. Prior to 1995, Mr. Viellenave was Vice President of NERI, supplier of Petrex soil gas and other environmental site assessment and remediation services, for twelve years. Before that, he was the Manager of Environmental Services for over ten years with Earth Sciences, Inc., Golden CO, implementing all environmental activities, including mine, mill, and chemical plant permitting, design and implementation of environmental monitoring systems, and investigation and remediation of environmental contamination events. He has taught numerous environmental geochemical seminars to industry and government over the past seven years, including the US Army Corps of Engineers, EPA, State Environmental agencies, and consultants, and teaches an annual short course in Environmental Geochemistry at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

John Fontana, Vice President, BS Geology, Oceanography & Physics, Humboldt State University, 1981. Mr. Fontana has 20 years experience in management of geologic and laboratory services. In the fields of soil, soil gas, groundwater, sampling, analysis, and remediation technologies, he has been responsible for developing and implementing new methods and procedures. He has authored and presented numerous papers on sampling methods, soil gas geochemistry, and analysis and interpretation of hydrocarbons in soils. He has designed and developed new tools for subsurface sampling and remediation purposes including injection methods, sparging, soil gas and groundwater sampling monitoring devices. He currently oversees all field and laboratory projects for ESN as well as R & D projects. From 1987-1997, he was President of Direct Geochemical Inc., which provided field-sampling services, mobile laboratory and fixed laboratory services. Prior to that, he was involved in field sampling and analysis of petroleum hydrocarbons in soils, ground water, and vapors for Detex and GX consultants. He began his geologic career as a wellsite geologist for Analex, conducting geological, geochemical, and lithologic logging of oil well drilling operations. He is also experienced in geophysical log interpretation, and statistical analysis of environmental and geochemical data including fingerprinting techniques. Mr. Fontana has also served been deposed as an expert witness in cases involving soil gas.
